Bacon
I found an extra bacon slice,
In my packet yesterday,
I didn't know what to do at first,
I wasn't even going to say,

This bacon meant so much to me,
I thought I'd share my joy,
For information's sake of course,
Not simply to annoy.

I'd cooked the breakfast bacon up,
Shared it between the boys and the dog,
It's not an issue normally,
But this heat makes cooking such a slog!

Anyway, I went to throw,
The empty packet in the bin,
But low and behold what did I see?
One slice tucked away within.

I debated, 'If I cook it for the boys,
An argument I foresee'
So I decided to be so bold,
I'd cook this bacon all for me!

I counted and recounted plates,
To make sure I was right,
Yes I was!, so I fed the boys,
Then went back to my own slice.

So as the boys wolfed down their grub,
I cooked my bacon up,
Making sure it was just right,
And ignoring cries from the pup.

As my bacon turned a golden brown,
My heart let out a flutter,
I'd eat my bacon with a fork,
And a slice of bread and butter.

Bacon cooked, meal prepared,
I walk into the room,
The boys all turned to look at me,
Like bats staring through the gloom.

"How do you have bacon today?"
"Did you open a new pack?"
"What will Dad say when he knows? "
"Why does it look so good like that?"

"Now my boys", I say, "This is all mine",
"We had an extra slice today"
And as I had some extra time,
I've cooked it slowly in this way".

I ate a bite of my bread,
A palette teaser you could say,
Then ieuan said those few words,
That totally ruined my day.

"How much bacon did you have boys?
Because I only had the two"
"Three" the boys shouted back,
So did Ieuan, I'd counted so I knew.

I'd checked the plates several times,
Then gave the one slice to the dog,
It's all right here in my head,
Like a fantastic mental log.

The one phrase brought it tumbling down,
"But mum are you sure?"
Atomic like my day imploded,
I wasn't as confident as before.

Perhaps I counted one slice twice,
Or gave two slices the dog,
Floundering now and searching for shore,
So much for you my mental log.

So anyway, as you can guess,
I gave the bacon up and i just caved,
My day was just a floating husk,
It simply could not be saved.

So I put this warning here for you,
If you're cooking breakfast for the kids,
Eat any extra bits straight away,
Oh if only I had hid.
